My Holiday Traditions

Every Thanksgiving, my family starts out the day by watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I look forward to watching it every year. I was worried about there not being a parade this year due to Corona, but I read an article that said that they are still going to have it, just modified of course. After watching the parade, we start preparing the food for dinner.

My family is a ham family. We do not have turkey on Thanksgiving, we have ham. It has been this way for as long as I can remember, and I am glad. Ham is the far superior Thanksgiving meat. We also always have green bean casserole, the best part of the meal in my opinion. Some sort of cheesy dish always completes the meal – mac & cheese or cheesy potatoes.

For dessert, my mom and I always make an apple pie. It is really more of an apple crumble mixed with an apple pie. We always serve it with vanilla ice cream and it is the perfect dessert. I love it so much and really enjoy making it with my mom every year.

After Thanksgiving dinner, we usually play board games and sometimes watch a movie.

We usually start putting up our Christmas decorations the day after Thanksgiving, or not long after. One of my favorite things in the whole world is decorating for Christmas. I love making the house look festive and jolly.

Throughout December, my mom and I always watch The Santa Clause movies. They are my favorite Christmas movies and I enjoy watching them every year.

Another Christmas tradition that I love is making sugar cookies. We always make the cut-out sugar cookies, but we do it with a twist. We like to make funny sugar cookies instead of the classic Christmas cookies like other people make. One year we did a Star Wars theme and made a bunch of Star Wars characters cookies.

Every Christmas Eve we watch my other favorite Christmas movie: Die Hard. Despite lots of debates, I do consider Die Hard a Christmas movie. My motto is: if it takes place on Christmas, then it’s a Christmas movie. I look forward to watching it all year.

On Christmas morning we always play Christmas music while we open our presents, and then have a brunch of scrambled eggs and ham. We usually spend the day playing board games, and end off the day with a pot roast dinner.

I really love my family’s holiday traditions, and look forward to spending the holidays with them every year.
